History of the Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley and Frieda Harris

Using Tarot as a means of divination was an essential part of The Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawns practice as was Qabalah, Astrology, Geomancy, Scrying, Astral travel, and Alchemy. This inspired Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris to create the “Thoth Tarot Deck”,   A. E. Waite and Pamela Coleman Smith to create the”Rider-Waite Tarot” and the “Builders of Adytum” (BOTA) deck to be created by Paul Foster Case. History of the Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley and Frieda HarrisAleister Crowley had originally thought that the Thoth Tarot would be a six month project but this in-fact turned into five years between 1938 and 1943. Crowley sought the help of Lady Frieda Harris to paint the deck in water-colour from his directive. Crowley also wrote a small book to accompany the Thoth Tarot deck which was called “The Book of Thoth” which would explain the meanings of the different cards and how these are interpreted. Each of the decks imagery produced by the members of The Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn were different. History of the Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley and Frieda Harris suggests that the “Thoth Tarot Deck” was created to join together Kabbalistic tradition, Tarot, philosophy, science and magick. Aleister Crowley felt the need to create a deck of the tarot which could encompass microcosm and macrocosm – “As above, so below” a deck which would be multifaceted. The resulting Thoth Tarot was an 80 card tarot deck. History of the Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley and Frieda Harris shows that the pair altered a few new names and re-numbered some trump cards of the major arcana portion of the deck, the only court cards of the Thoth Tarot deck to retain the traditional names are the Queens. One example of the altered names is that of the male page, in the Thoth Tarot Deck the page is represented by the princess. The princess card gave the Thoth deck an opportunity to include a card depicting to a young woman. The princess is the feminine counterpart to the Thoth prince card, otherwise called the knight in traditional cards. The traditional king card became the knight card in the Thoth deck. Lady Frieda Harris used bright vibrant water colours on the imagery depicted in the deck of the tarot of Thoth, the artwork is modern and timeless. The card suits are recognizable in the deck and many tarot card enthusiasts enjoy using the Thoth tarot deck.  Despite all the work that went into the cards, the deck of the Tarot of Thoth did not become available to the public until 1969. Both Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris died before their Thoth Tarot deck became published.
