So are dreams a window into our unconscious?

mysticismSigmund Freud believed that dreams are a window into our unconscious, and some studies indicate that he may have been onto something. His attitude toward dream study was that of a statistician who does not know, and has no means of foreseeing, what conclusions he will find from the information gathered.

Sigmund Freud pointed out that dreams are a window into our unconscious, because of a constant connection between some part of every dream and some detail of the dreamer’s life during the previous waking state.

This positively establishes a relation between sleeping states and waking states and disposes of the widely prevalent view that dreams are purely nonsensical phenomena coming from nowhere and leading nowhere. Thanks to Freud’s attitude toward dream study and his interpretation of dreams the “royal road” into the unconscious is now open to all explorers.

So what are dreams?

Dreams are images and imagery, thoughts, sounds, voices, and individualized feelings experienced when you sleep. This may incorporate people you know, people you’ve never met, places you’ve been, and places you’ve never even heard of.

Occasionally your dream is merely recalling events that happened earlier in the day. They may also be your deepest and darkest fears and secrets, and most private fantasies.

There’s no end to what the mind can encounter in a dream. Stresses in waking life can manifest in dreams plainly or be cleverly hidden with imagery.

So what are dreams telling me?

Many Scientists still debate the meaning and purpose of dreams, but it’s difficult not to believe that at least some of our sleep-time imagery is filled with some sort of significance.

The use of dream dictionaries and or dream analysis can help to reveal what the images you dream about mean, by giving meanings to the scenarios, objects and people that you have dreamt about.

Before you get started unlocking the meaning of your dream it is important that I point out that even if two people have the same dream this is in no way implying it will have the same meaning for both people, the dream must be put in with the context of your life.

Generally dreams that are the most significant will typically happen during the deepest part of your sleep.
